Fancy Towels

03-20-09

This week we will dress up a regular kitchen towel. You can also do this to a bathroom hand towel.

The set used is Fruit & Veggie Names. Next week we will have the matching set Veggie Names up. So you may see some of those designs used on this page as well

First choose your fabric and measure how long you would like your ruffled edge. I used the full width of the fabric. Generally 44"/45".  I did a 2" and 4" ruffle. So I needed to double the length of fabric I cut to 4" or 8". Measure it and mark it.

Use a straight edge to mark all the way across so you have a line to cut on.

Cut on your line with a nice sharp scissors.

Take the piece you cut to your ironing board. Lay it out face side down.

Fold the piece in half and press it with your iron. This will help you out a LOT when you are stitching!

Now serge the edge or use your zig zag stitch on  your sewing machine.

Next run a basting stitch in the middle of your serger or zig zag edge. I set my stitch length at 5 mm

Now you need to GENTLY side the fabric back on the basting stitch. I generally hold the top stitch and wrap it around my finger as I GENTLY push the fabric back so that it creates a nice ruffle.

Next lay your ruffled edge out on your towel. I always stitch the design first. This way if something goes wrong you don't have a lot of extra work in the towel and end up wasting your ruffle. When you lay it out try and follow a pattern or line on the towel to keep your ruffle straight. This is a waffle weave towel so I was able to follow the squares to keep the ruffle straight. If you have to you can use a fabric marking pencil and draw a line to keep the ruffle straight.

Now pin the ruffle in place. Don't think you will be able to keep this in place while you are stitching it on. You most likely will NOT be able to keep it straight. Ask me how I know! LOL

Take it to your sewing machine and zig zag over the top edge. Another thing you could do is put a nice ribbon over the top of the ruffled edge and stitch it on with the ruffle.

This is an announcement group with very LITTLE email!

Here are just a few more examples of how you can really decorate up a simple (& CHEAP) kitchen towel with just a small piece of fabric! I tried matching up the fabric with the designs I stitched. You can also use up the smaller strips of fabric in your fabric stash!

Use fabrics to match your kitchen decor as well.

What a wonderful gift for a wedding shower or add a cookbook and some kitchen supplies for an awesome wedding gift!
