Fun & Flirty
Apron Set 04-08-09 |
This week we take our plain apron and gloves to fun
and flirty!
You will need: 1 plain apron (preferably with no pockets) 1 pair cleaning gloves Fabrics of your choice Ribbon of your choice & fusible tape The designs used this week are available to paying members in a download at the bottom of the page:-) |
Lay your fabric out like we did in the fancy towels page and measure out your fabric widths. I cut 10" for the ruffle for the apron, 8" for the towel and 6" for the gloves. Remember these will be cut in half when you fold and stitch them. To see how to ruffle these go to the Fancy Towels project. |
On my apron I cut off 5". Because when adding the ruffle at the bottom the apron would have been too long. Make sure you serge or zig zag your raw edge. Use a little fray check as well if needed. |
Next you need to stitch your cherry blanks. We have included 3 sizes, 4x4, 5x7 & 6x10 (the size I used). These are done just like a basic applique. You need to do them first so when add them to your apron there is a finished edge on the pocket opening. Hint: Use the smaller sizes for children's fun aprons. |
I used a piece of med wt stabilizer across the whole back of the apron. |
I measured 8" in from the edge and 5" down to get my center for my pocket placement. You can also just put the apron on, put your hands were they feel comfortable and mark. I found I got almost the exact same placement. |
Hoop and start stitching. When I had my first hooping in place I marked a line down the inside edge of the hoop so I could try and keep both pockets even. When I got my placement stitch done it looks like this. Use matching thread, I did a different color so you could see it in the picture. |
Line up your cherry blank so that your finished edge is within the two marks shown above in brown. Tape in place, it will NOT stay on its own. |
SLOW your machine down to stitch the cherry blank in place! I had mine set to 600 spm. |
As you can see the pockets are almost dead on. Any marks that you made with your fabric pencil will wipe right off with a rag and a little water. |
Now we are going to add our ribbon trim. Cut a piece of ribbon just about and inch longer the than the very top of your apron. Cut a piece of fusible tape that length as well. |
Iron the tape to the back of your ribbon as per manufacturers instructions. Careful some ribbon will MELT!!! |
Peel the backing off of the tape. Now place it on your apron top. Put a towel over the top and gently press into place. I used PERMANENT fusible tape. Flip over your apron and fold over the ribbon edges and iron into place, again with a towel over them. |
Now hoop your bib of your apron and stitch on the Sweet As cherry design.
Now attach your largest ruffle along the bottom of the apron like shown in the fancy towels page. Then I added a ribbon along the top of the ruffle to cover the stitching that attached the ruffle just like we did on the top of the apron.
I also cut the tie strings off as they did not match at all and used the matching ribbon as the new ties. Make sure you put fray check on your ribbon ends so they do not fray! |
The apron is done and looks fabulous!!! |
Now the gloves! Use the smallest ruffle on the gloves. I just carefully zig zag stitched them onto the top edge of the glove. |
Make sure you are NOT stitching your opening of your glove shut! |
