Stabilize it
REVIEW! 06-12-09 I posted this last summer for Stitch It News. I felt it was important to keep on the site! Even though this is not a penny pinching project it will save you money if your stitch outs come out the first time! Many think you can use tearaway stabilizer for almost anything. You should not! Tearaway will not hold up as well as a cutaway stabilizer. Even if you use a very heavy tearaway. I am going to show some designs stitched on the same kind of fabric using a tearaway and a cutaway stabilizer. NOTE the differences. For each stitch out I changed my needles so they would be sharp and not an issue.

Our Annie stitched on a medium cutaway stabilizer.

Our same design stitched on a heavy tearaway. It is not bad, but not nearly as perfect as the cutaway.

Applique apple stitched on heavy tearaway. Notice it turns out fine. This is because there is a lot less stitching to break down the fibers of the stabilizer.
This was stitched on a HEAVY tearaway. Notice how it is already coming apart. Imagine stitching a filled design and how this stabilizer after just a short time would start breaking down!
Stitching can be off because of many other reasons as well. Dull needles. CHANGE YOUR NEEDLES REGULARLY! Just because it is not broke, does not mean it is working well! Also, are you hooping properly? If you have to float your item (not hoop it but lay it on top of your hooped stabilizer) you MUST use a basting stitch to get a good stitch out. Designs can get pulled or bumped very easily out of whack. So even your design is only off on one side it is not getting proper stabilization. Also, all stabilizers are not made equal! Ask for samples and try different kinds to see what your machine prefers.
