Holiday/Seasonal Towel Topper sets

07-15-09

This weeks project is Holiday/Seasonal Towel Topper Sets.

These are so fun and festive! The best part is the designs used are included below for paying members!

Pick out some fun fabric that you would like to use for your towel topper.

Hoop some heavy weight tearaway stabilizer.

You are going to start with the design that is Part 1 (or labeled pt1)

This is done just like any other applique`. First your placement stitch will stitch. Place your fabric over it and stitch your tack down stitch. Trim and then finish with the zigzag outline. This is the BACK of your towel topper.

This is what it should like when you are done. You do not need to trim really close as when the topper is put together you will not see those edges. I put the zigzag in so that the topper does not fall apart easily.

Now we start the top of our topper or part 2. With this it starts out the same as the back. With this design we have 3 different colors of fabric to place.

You can see here we have all 3 layers of fabric in place.

After your zigzag outline is finished you will place your ribbon (or whatever you choose to use) for your hanger. Tape your ribbon into place. Make sure you tape it all the way down the design as shown. This way when you put your two pieces together your ribbon will not get caught where you do not want it.

Place the back onto the top trying to line them up perfectly. The front sides should be facing each other. Tape it into place and put back onto the machine to stitch the last zigzag that will hold the two piece together.

Remove your tearaway from the back piece and right side out your topper.

Very cute!

Take your towel that you plan on using and lay it out. If you did the small (4x4) topper you will need to cut this into 4 even parts. I fold and iron it to crease it so I know where to cut. For the medium (5x7) and Large (6x10) toppers cut it in half across the middle of the towel.

Here I have 4 small mini towels. You will need to finish the raw edges. I used my serger to finish them or you can even run a zigzag with your regular machine.

Embroider your towel with your matching design now! It will be much easier than later!

Fold your finished towel in half the long way. Mark your center with a pin or pencil mark.

What I did was just make the same number of pleats on each side going to the center. Take this to your sewing machine and stitch across to hold it.

Tuck the top of the towel into your topper. Make sure both sides are even! (ask me how I know this!) LOL

Pin into place and take to your machine to stitch together.

When you are stitching this be sure the back of your topper is not smooshed up out of place.

Tah Dah!!! You have a really cute towel topper!!!
